Satellites: Europe is arming itself to counter SpaceX and Amazon

Alongside the Galileo and Copernicus constellations, the European Commission is studying the launch of a new large sovereignty infrastructure to withstand SpaceX or Amazon. Technical studies are launched for a new constellation of European telecommunication satellites.

With the European Union’s recovery plan and budget for 2021-2027 finally approved, the team led by Thierry Breton , European Commissioner for the Internal Market, is now in the starting blocks to accelerate projects. In the space sector, the European Commission, sponsor of two major satellite infrastructures, the Galileo constellation for navigation and the Copernicus earth observation network, is ready to provide European countries with a new satellite constellation. This time, the aim is to provide EU governments with secure government communications and to provide European citizens with a good Internet service, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
